5 Ways to Create Psychological Safety

Would you like team members to speak up, ask for help, and offer more opinions? Here are ways to promote psychological safety on your team (these work great for remote teams!):

  • Proactively check-in and show curiosity about your employees' lives outside of work.

  • Show vulnerability. Share professional and personal experiences and encourage your employees to do the same.

  • Celebrate small wins. Wins include personal as well as professional successes. I usually begin every staff meeting and coaching session with "What can we celebrate?"

  • Foster a sense of shared responsibility. Encourage participation by asking: What do you think? What’s your perception? What are we missing?

  • Encourage risk. Give staff latitude to try out ideas, propose new projects or processes, and experiment.
