Earning respect from your manager takes more than getting your assigned work done. It requires understanding their priorities, not just those that immediately affect you. It also means communicating in the way that they need.

Here are questions guaranteed to provide the framework for a respectful relationship:

• How can I keep you informed in a way that doesn't require more of your time?

• What is your preferred communication method?

• Do you prefer email, texts, phone, Zoom, or in-person conversations?

• How often would you like to hear from me?

• How much detail would you like about my/my team's work?

• What can I do to make your job easier?

• What can I take off your plate?

• What can I do for you that I'm not already doing?

• What questions should I ask that I haven't?
