Even if you know your targets and annual goals, you may not be aware of everything your manager expects of you. There are unspoken expectations that every manager should have. Here are three things to do to meet them:

  • Collaborate. Many managers spend up to 50 percent of their days dealing with conflict. Managers want people who can collaborate. Overcome differences with others so you can work together effectively, even if you don't like one other.

  • Lead initiatives. Those who raise their hands get seen and promoted. Don't be reluctant to offer a take on new initiatives, even if they don’t come to fruition.

  • Stay current. Managers rely on their direct reports for information. Read industry journals and stay informed about your competition, customers, the marketplace, and what is happening in your industry.
